A2PBEER

A2PBEER is an innovating 4-year European project which seeks to develop a cost effective, “energy efficient retrofitting” methodology for public buildings, drawing on the expertise of over 20 partners. Buildings account for around 40% of total final energy consumption in Europe. Energy-efficient retrofitting has an essential role to play in meeting the EU's 20-20-20 targets. It is possible to make a greater impact through interventions in non-residential buildings, given that they have 40% higher energy consumption than residential buildings. 30% of non-residential buildings in Europe are public buildings. A2PBEER focuses on energy-efficient retrofitting of public buildings.

The main objectives are:

  • To demonstrate that public buildings can meet the present requirements of near-zero energy buildings (NZEBs) using available, affordable and adaptable technologies.
  • To show that it is technically feasible and profitable to reduce energy consumption in existing public buildings by over 50%.
  • To show that the process is replicable for different uses and climates with investment recovery periods of less than seven years.
  • To mobilise renovation of existing buildings in Europe offering models for constructing districts of near-zero districts buildings.
  • To mobilise agents in the building industry (manufacturers, architects, administrators, ESCOs, owners and users).
