The ATELIER project centres on the cities of Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Bilbao (Spain). The aim is to create Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) that can be replicated in a further eight European cities. In the two 'lighthouse cities', ATELIER will showcase innovative solutions. These will include buildings with smart mobility and technologies that will generate rather than consuming energy. The project will produce a surplus of 1340 MWh in primary energy and save 1.7 kt in CO2 emissions and 23 t in NOx emissions. The 'fellow cities' —Bratislava (Slovakia), Budapest (Hungary), Copenhagen (Denmark), Krakow (Poland), Matosinhos (Portugal) and Riga (Latvia)— will reproduce and adapt the successfully implemented solutions and act as test beds for future smart cities.
