The basic principle entails capturing sunlight and heat using specific devices and transforming them into useful energy for domestic, industrial and large-scale power generation applications. <\/p>\r\n<p>There are several different <strong>solar technologies<\/strong>:<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"col-md-12 m-auto\">\r\n<div class=\"module-title text-center\">\r\n<h2 class=\"sidelines\"><span>1. Photovoltaic solar power<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"col-md-6\">\r\n<p>This technology converts sunlight directly into electricity using the photovoltaic effect. The panels used are made up of semiconductor cells (silicon) which release electrons when struck by the photons, thus generating direct current (DC). An inverter is used to transform this current into alternating current (AC) for domestic use or export to the grid. The systems can be:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>\u2022\t<strong>Grid-connected<\/strong>: surplus power is exported to the power grid.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\t<li>\u2022\t<strong>Off-grid<\/strong>: require batteries for storage.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\t<li>\u2022\t<strong>Hybrid<\/strong>: combine grid uptake and storage.<\/li>\r\n\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>The efficiency of the solar panels depends on the quality of the silicon (monocrystalline, polycrystalline or amorphous) and factors such as orientation, tilt and solar radiation. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"col-md-6\"><img alt=\"Parque solar en una colina.\" class=\"m-b-20 lazyload\" style=\"margin-bottom:20px;\" data-src=\"\/assets\/media\/paneles-solares-colina.jpg\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"container m-b-20\">\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"col-md-12 m-auto\">\r\n<div class=\"module-title text-center\">\r\n<h2 class=\"sidelines\"><span>2. Solar thermal energy<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"col-md-6\"><img alt=\"Ekian\" style=\"margin-bottom:20px;\" data-src=\"\/assets\/media\/ekian1.jpg\" class=\" lazyload\"><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"col-md-6\">\r\n<p>Solar thermal systems use solar radiation to generate heat, mainly for domestic hot water, heating and industrial processes. Components include:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>\u2022\t<strong>Solar collectors<\/strong> (flat plates or vacuum tubes) that absorb the radiation.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\t<li>\u2022\t<strong>Circuit<\/strong> through which the heat transfer fluid (water or glycol mixture) is piped.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\t<li>\u2022\t<strong>Accumulator<\/strong> for storing heat. In advanced applications, the heat can be used to produce steam and generate electricity in solar thermal plants. There are <strong>low temperature systems<\/strong> (for domestic use) and <strong>high temperature systems<\/strong> (for industrial use), with the possibility of storage in <strong>molten salts<\/strong> to guarantee supply even when the sun is not shining. <\/li>\r\n <\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"container m-b-20\">\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"col-md-12 m-auto\">\r\n<div class=\"module-title text-center\">\r\n<h2 class=\"sidelines\"><span>3. Concentrated solar power (CSP)<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"col-md-6\">\r\n<p>CSP uses mirrors or lenses to concentrate sunlight onto a receiver, which can reach temperatures of over 1,000\u202f\u00b0C. It can be used to heat a fluid (water, oil or molten salt), producing steam which drives a turbine and generates electricity. The main types are:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t\t<li>\u2022\t<strong>Parabolic trough<\/strong>: curved mirrors concentrate light onto receiver tubes.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\t<li>\u2022\t<strong>Solar power towers<\/strong>: mirrors (heliostats) reflect the sunlight onto a receiver mounted atop a tower.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\t<li>\u2022\t<strong>Parabolic solar dishes<\/strong>: the light is concentrated onto a focal point for specific applications. The great advantage is the possibility of thermal storage, which allows continued production of electricity, even at night. <\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n <\/ul>\r\n<p>Among the <strong>advantages<\/strong> of solar power, it relies on an inexhaustible source (sunlight), limits greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to energy independence. In addition, it can be used for diverse applications, from domestic self-consumption to large industrial installations, and requires relatively little maintenance.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, it does have some <strong>drawbacks<\/strong>. The initial installation cost is high and requires adequate space and good orientation.
