The BIMEP – Biscay Marine energy Platform – is an ocean infrastructure for research, demonstration and operation of wave-energy capturing systems on the open sea. the Cantabrian Sea offers exceptional conditions for testing the effectiveness of the new mechanisms and technologies for harnessing wave energy currently being developed by companies throughout Europe. The facility has modern underwater infrastructures with connection to the power grid on the mainland, and an entire telecommunications system for systematically gathering and analysing the data from the systems being tested at sea.
A tug boat tows the WEC to the selected deployment point, inside one of the circular aread around each berth, marked with a marker buoy.
The WEC is moored at that site.
The free end of the dynamic cable, where the interconnection is, is refloated to the sea surface.
The umbiilical cable of the WEC is connected to the dynamic cable on board the vessel.
Once the connection is done and tested, the umbilical and the interconnection are put back on the seabed.
The WEC is now ready to work and export the generated energy yo the power grid.
The WEC converts the movement of the waves into electricity. The energy generated is first transmitted over the umbilical cable.
The energy is transmitted over the umbilical cable from the WEC to the seabed.
The energy generated passes from the umbilical cable, via the interconnection point, to the dynamic cable.
Several dynamic cables end in a single junction box. Each dynamic cable transmits the power generated by a WEC.
One /assets/infografias cable transmits all the energy generated by all the WECs connected to the same junction box.
The /assets/infografias power cable transmits the energy generated by the offshore WECa to shore.
Before it reaches the coast, the /assets/infografias cable is buried underground.
The beach manhorel (or BMH) is located at the point where the submarine cable makes landfall. Here the power is transferred to conventional terrestrial cables.
An underground power line transmits the power from the BMH to the substation.
The onshore substation raises the voltage and feeds the energy into the local grid.
