Electrical distribution networks

The axis of the decarbonization of the electrical system

Electrical networks are the backbone of the energy transition and the growing electrification of the economy. The high penetration of generation with renewable sources, together with the emergence of new users capable of producing their own energy in a distributed way, requires having a network prepared to manage two-way flows, guaranteeing at all times the security and stability of the system.

In this context, electricity networks must face additional challenges, such as the integration of energy storage and the incorporation of new energy-intensive consumers, including electric mobility and data centres. The digitalisation of the networks is therefore already an absolute necessity in order to ensure a secure, sustainable and competitive energy supply for all consumers.

The Basque Energy Agency has in the past participated in public private collaboration projects aimed at the development of smart electricity networks, with Bidelek Sareak as a reference, whose objective was to modernize the distribution network to increase its efficiency, safety and quality of supply.

In addition, the Basque Energy Agency has been promoting the renovation of common electrical installations in residential buildings in the Basque Country for a period of 25 years or more, through a specific aid programme.

In its commitment to promote knowledge and dissemination in the field of electricity networks, the Basque Energy Agency has been organizing for years, together with Tecnalia and Orkestra, the Intelligent Electricity Network Days (JIEEC). This forum allows experts from different countries and fields to share experiences and reflect on the state of the art and the latest developments in the electricity sector.
